Even with an awareness of an organization’s purpose we can have misalignment in using business as a force for good and how employees contribute effectively. As Jim Collins mentioned in his book ‘Good to Great’ it all starts with ‘first who, then what’. So how do B Corps ensure that they attract and retain the right people? And help them take ownership and keep focus? Having a clear purpose is not enough.
The effect of poor hires
According to a CareerBuilder survey, sixty-nine percent of employers reported being affected by poor hires during the year of 2017. The survey reported productivity levels lowering by 39 percent, employee morale negatively affected by 33 percent, fewer sales by 11 percent and 9 percent increase in legal issues. What is causing this mismatch? The main reason is that employers, purpose oriented or not, focus on objective screening of candidate’s skills and overlook the influence of personal qualities such as openness, curiosity, creativity and courage.
Waste of talent
A lot of talent gets wasted due to short term focus on performance and job skills in hiring. The Playmakers want to engage employers to look beyond just track records and learn how to connect people out of passion. The way to do so is to let people give meaning to the purpose from the inside out. Building a solid foundation with leading principles that can be used by everyone in the company to stay connected and to make decisions on the right touchstones. Accompanied by a clear DNA profile of characteristics and examples of that people should bring. And finally, facilitated by the right conditions for a working culture where everyone matters.
Discuss what matters
We believe that the main condition for a meaningful workplace is having a value dialogue: a wholehearted conversation about passion, conviction and motivation to grow in work. What gives you energy? What breaks your energy? When are you at your best? And what do you need to feel motivated? These questions are simple and very helpful to tap into what makes people tick and connect to the company’s purpose.
Boost company’s purpose
Are these conversations reserved for managers? We think not. What if colleagues conduct these value dialogues and talk about passion and purpose? Then managers can focus their energy on the expertise of employees and make sure it aligns with the ambition and impact of the company. Having both passion and expertise covered, helps employees boost the company’s purpose while fulfilling their potential.
